Subiect: Archeological Prospects in the Early Middle Ages Settlement at Popeni-Cuceu (Sălaj County) Some Remakes on the early Middle Ages Pottery in Transylvania
The two neighbor villages of Popeni and Cuceu (now belonging to the town of Jibou) are placed in North-West Romania, on the Southern side of the Hills of Sălaj.
ln 1978, Al. V. Matei (Museum of Zalău) checked by small prospects two places: "Pe Pogor" (Popeni) and "Valea Bochii" (Cuceu). He reported briefly next year the results of the excavations. In 1979 the excavations had been restarted at "Pe Pogor". The researches contribute to a documentary support for the VIIIth-IXth centuries A.D. in North-West Romania a period, not enough studied yet. ·
The settlement is placed on a flat land limited to the South by the hills. At „Pe Pogor" it was possible to identify on the top plough soil the shapes of 13 dwellings. Even there was about 400 m between the archaeological trenches, there is, probably, only one settlement, as the pottery suggests~
The dwelling nr. 2 (pl. II, 1) has been uncovered. It has a rectangular shape (3,75X2 m) being deeper with 0,30 m from the ancient soil. Outside, in the very near, there was a hearth surrounded by stones. Dwelling nr. 1 (pi. I, 2) was only part folly excavated, so it's shape and sizes could not be recorded. We suppose there were some fire installations inside the houses, because big clay plates used usually on top of the kilns have been discovered (pi. II, 4; pl. V, 25). There were. also excavated, even some of them, only partially, 4 pits of circular and rectangular shape. Pit nr. 1, rectangular (3,5Xl,42 m), 0,30 m deep had on its bottom a stratum of charcoal of 0,10 m thickness.
Thou some authors consider such pits like dwellings, our opinion is that they are only some dependencies. There are some analogies in the Western Slaves civilization.
